History and Geography of Hockey in Ireland

Hockey had started to be played in Ireland by the eighteenth century. There were two stick sports been played in Ireland at this time that are now known as hurling and hockey. Hurling which is an Irish sport that was played by mostly Irish people and catholic people. Were hockey is an English sport and was played by the English and Protestants. Till this day that is still seen very clearly that in Ireland hockey is predominantly played by Protestants and hurling and the rest of the GAA games are predominantly played by Catholics.

When hockey was first played in Ireland it was played with a narrow stick with a hook at the end of it. It was played with a hard wooden ball known as the ‘crag’ and  was mainly played in winter.
